1.7.2014 - Tour start => off to Anchorage

Let's start the tour!

Finally found a subtenant for the apartment and booked a flight to Anchorage/Alaska. Well then, let the adventure begin....

All preparations were made but I was a bit concerned because of the packaging of the bicycle for the flight (I called the service hotline to make sure there will be space in the aircraft and the box with the bike will fit in it). Therefore I went to the evening check-in the day before. My sports bag no problem, but the box with the bike. They told me - after longe clarifications - that the box is to high! Anyway, it was to late for the check-in. For that reason I had to store the box over night at the airport. The next morning, early enough, ready to correct the packaging I got surprised when the supervisor at the check-in told me that the box is too long not too high... I hope they know which dimension to fly the aircraft! Fortunately, this way the correction was even easier to carry out... and my bike was finally checked-in!

So far everything worked out. In Frankfurt I had quickly to buy a flight back from the USA otherwise the airline would refuse to let my on board the aircraft (airline regulation!). 20 min later I had my ticket and was boarding. On the flight the pilot kept us up to date with soccer results as good as he could :-/

Immigration in Anchorage was no problem and the boarder officers were very friendly even though the USA lost the soccer game against Belgium! All my equipment arrived intact - only one krank of the bicycle was looking out of the box and had a few scratches.

From the airport I was riding by bike to the Backpacker Inn. Unfortunately the navigation app on my iPhone could not find the street number and so I was too much south. It was not so easy to find a way to the appropiate number because the street was not going through. A local cyclist could finally help with a description how to get to the Backpackers Inn. There I found out that my booking I'd made on the internet from Switzerland a few days ago did not work - but they had a spare bed left in exactly the room I tried to book one...

So far so good, I've achieved everything for that day and went to bed pretty early after a short walk in the neighbourhood.

So weit ging alles gut.
